    Description

    This is a copy of the song “A Ballad of Trees and the Master”, a poem by Sidney Lanier set to music by G W Chadwick, New England composer. Found in the files of Rose and Ottilie Sutro, this is hand-notated by Chadwick, it appears. There are two copies included both notated in the same hand. Lanier wrote this poem in 1881; Chadwick composed the tune by 1899 when it was awarded the “1st Prize in Class IV musical record composition 1899/to Mr. Frangcon Davies”. At the bottom of both is “The Original Key C Minor” “Oliver Ditson Company/copyright MCMXXVII by G.W. Chadwick”.
    Two copies of “A Ballad of Trees and the Master” by George Chadwick and Sidney Lanier: both hand notated and in very good condition: some discoloration on the rear at the folded edge which does not interfere with lyrics or tune and does not go through to the inside.
