    THE OLDEST LIVING GRADUATE
In 1973, when the Dallas Theater Center was having difficulty finding plays with regional American settings, Preston Jones decided to try his hand at a West Texas play.  That play was THE LAST MEETING OF THE KNIGHTS OF THE WHITE MAGNOLIA.  "As I was writing," Jones explained in an interview with David Richards of the
    Washington Star
, "the whole town of Bradleyville just seemed to come to life in my mind.  So I wrote a trilogy about the place."
Since then the trilogy plays have had a remarkably active life on the stage, and Preston Jones has been hailed as a major new American playwright.
When first produced by the Dallas Theater Center under the Paul Baker's direction, the plays broke all attendance records and receive standing ovations even during a week when the entire trilogy was performed each night.  The THE LAST MEETING OF THE KNIGHTS OF THE WHITE MAGNOLIA  was picked by the American Playwrights Theatre as their 1975-1976 offering, and performed in more than forty theaters across the country.  In April, 1976, A TEXAS TRILOGY was produced by Robert Whitehead and Roger L. Stevens at the Kennedy Center in Washington, under Alan Schneider's direction, and in September moved to Broadway for its New York opening.
