Auctions is pleased to offer a beautiful antique Chinese Scholar's calligraphy Brush Pot. Brush pots were an important symbol of a Chinese scholar's refinement and were referred to as one of the "treasures", a reference to the “Four Treasures of the Study” and the
general name of the main traditional writing tools of
Chinese
calligraphy, i.e. writing brush, ink, ink stone, and paper. The scholar hoped to become proficient in the art of poetry, painting, and, most importantly, calligraphy - the “three perfections.”
Classical scholars had more than just the traditional Four Treasures in their studies - the other "Treasures" included the brush-holder, brush hanger, paperweights, seal, seal-ink and brush pot, which together with
related paraphernalia became coveted items in the scholar’s study.
Used to store calligraphy brushes, brush pots (“bitong”) during
the Ming and early Qing dynasties, were made of wood, bamboo, porcelain, pottery, lacquer, and even jade, and
as with many scholar's objects, were often decorated with appropriate literati subject matter.
The preference seems to have been for brush pots done in so-called "organic taste" where the mellow colors of carved bamboo, and the natural forms found in nature were most appreciated.
However, this unusual example is carved from rosewood with decorative mother-of-pearl inlay, and brass fixtures. It measures 6 inches in width by 6 inches in depth by 6.75 inches in height (15.2 cm by 15.2 cm by 17.1 cm). The brush pot shows wear consistent with a dating to the mid-19th century, although this is difficult to determine given the nature of the object; it could very well be earlier.
This would make an exceptionally fine addition to any collection of scholar's or calligraphy objects.
