Embossed Gold Tinted Foil ~ 1920's
    Coffee Jar Label
Gummed Gold Foil Label & Seal Set
This elegant set of coffee labels have remarkable characteristics. Included are 2 Coffee Jar labels, almost identical, one is for a 1 pound jar, the other is for a 3 pound jar, both are from just after WW I in the early 1920's. These items are from John Blaul's Sons, Burlington, Iowa.
The two gummed coffee jar labels are about 3 ¼ inches high. They are deep stamped embossed with 3 dimensional features. They are printed on unique, die cut coffee cup & saucer shaped gummed foil with a gold foil surface. Gilded Gold ink Tinting with real gold flake content! Look closely at the photos. You can see the Gold Flake. The gold glimmers brightly. They say, "Gold Cup Vacuum Pack Coffee ~ Roasted and packed by John Blaul's Sons Co. Burlington ~ Cedar Rapids, Iowa."  Black and Brown ink on Gold gilded foil. These extraordinary labels are extremely fascinating and exude elegance and quality.
The other item included in this lot is about 20 years older, from the turn of the century. It is the gold seal that they paste over the final seam of paper or drawstrings for their shipping sacks, boxes & containers. Their sealed bag, coffee wrappers and packets, so the local grocer could show it is unadulterated. He hadn't opened it and mixed it with cheaper inferior brands. The seal is over 2 inches in diameter with serrated edging all the way around . It is printed on gummed paper with gold gilded ink with actual gold flake content. It has a serrated, saw tooth like, perimeter. It is not embossed, but uses gold gilded ink for a glistening effect. It says, John Blaul's Sons Co. Burlington, Iowa ~ Roasters of High Grade Coffee.
This distinctive Set is from the 1900’s Food Processor, Coffee Roaster and Grocer Wholesaler, John Blaul’s Sons Co. Burlington and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They were an 1800’s and early 1900’s regional grocery distributor, who purchased food and provisions in large quantities, shipped coffee beans in on barges on the Mississippi River to their processing plants at the Mississippi River Rail Heads and roasted, processed and packaged coffee beans in their own brand boxes and distributed them by rail to Ma & Pa grocers and General Stores and sent them
Out West, for settlers and railroad towns in the expanding frontier. The merchants all had coffee grinders and would grind their customers coffee beans
    fresh, in the store.
