1992 was the
500th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World.  Composer Gershon Kingsley and composer/lyricist
Stephen H. Lemberg collaborated onColumbus Chronology Out of Time, a theater piece to mark the occasion.  The show as conceived never made it to the Broadway stage, but much of the score did land in
the musical “Cristobal,” performed at the Union Square Theater.

Gershon Kingsley

Götz Gustav Ksinski
; October 28, 1922 – December 10, 2019) was a contemporary German-American composer,
a pioneer of electronic music and the Moog synthesizer, a partner in the electronic music duo Perrey and Kingsley, founder of the First Moog Quartet, and writer of rock-inspired compositions for Jewish religious ceremonies. Kingsley is most famous for his 1969 influential electronic instrumental composition "Popcorn".
Kingsley conducted and arranged many Broadway musicals,
and composed for film, television shows and commercials. His compositions were eclectic and vary between avant-garde and pop styles. Kingsley also composed classical chamber works, and his opera
Raoul
was premiered in Bremen, Germany in 2008.
His work was recognized with a Tony Award nomination for Best Conductor and Musical Director, two Clio Awards for his work in advertising music, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Bob Moog Foundation.
Kingsley died on December 10, 2019 at the age of 97 in Manhattan, New York.

It was originally written for the country music duo of Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton, who recorded it with special guest Chet Atkins in RCA Studios for release in 1973 by the American Freedom Train Foundation. The 45 single of the recording was sold as a fund-raising item for the bicentennial trip Freedom Train took across the United States.
The song is historical narrative of the United States, which was about to celebrate its Bicentennial.
