    Vintage script for the 1959 play, which premiered in July, 1958 in London's West End, under the direction of John Gielgud, and winning the Evening Standard Drama Award, before moving to Broadway at the Music Box Theatre, opening on December 2, 1959, and playing for 337 performances, and closing on October 1, 1960. Annotations in holograph pencil of copy number 14 on the title page, and stage direction or underlining stage direction on five pages.
    Peter Shaffer's first staged play, a resounding success which quickly established the young playwright's reputation. A taunt domestic drama centered on a young German student who moves to England to tutor the daughter of a psychologically damaged well-to-do family and is drawn into their various dramas. Winner of the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Foreign play and nominated for a Tony for Best Featured Actress for Juliet Mills, her Broadway debut. Made into the 1962 film, directed by Daniel Mann, starring Roasalind Russell, Jack Haawkins, and Richard Beymer.
