......A pillar in the history of the district, the Sculfort building was built by Gustave Sculfort in 1852. Hardware and the first machine tools were then manufactured there. In 1914, 1,200 workers worked there. The company, like many others, definitively disappeared in the 1960s. The buildings will however be reused in the 1990s to install the Luna (the city's concert hall) and the Espace Sculfort, one of the main exhibition centers.......

SCULFORT YEL
A NAME, A BRAND, A GUARANTEE OF QUALITY
Recognized throughout the world as the specialist in the field of railway maintenance and heavy machining equipment, Sculfort YEL continues, thanks to its specialized machines, to conquer new markets.
The strong industrial past of the Sambre is closely linked to the name of Sculfort. In fact, the factory employed over 1,000 people at the start of the 20th Century. This expert in specialized machine tools, the flagship of the Sambrian industry, has acquired a reputation and a unique know-how in the world. Today with its specialized machines in the field of railway maintenance, Sculfort Yel continues this image of seriousness and reliability which has made its reputation.
Machines specializing in railways
For Anthony Leroy, manager of the Maubeugeois site, "Sculfort has always manufactured specialized machines, we continue to do so, to exploit this know-how in the field of machining and profiling of train wheels, trams ...". We manufacture specific machines which then go to maintenance sites around the world, confirms the site manager. Only 10 factories in the world are able to offer this service.
A trial, a requirement
Over time, the wheels of a train become deformed and are no longer perfectly round. Technically, a flat forms, which causes problems with vibrations and the grip of the wheel on the rail. Before, to remedy the problem, it was necessary to dismantle the axles in order to profile the wheels and return them to their original shapes. This technique increased the risks for trains due to assembly and disassembly.
Today, thanks to Sculfort machines, maintenance can be carried out directly on the wheels without having to dismantle the axles. The Sambrian company manufactures these machines, called "pit towers". It buys the parts in Europe, assembles them and adapts the technology to deliver machines on demand. The machine is then tested and verified with the customer who comes to see it working.
Know-how that is exported all over the world
“We see a lot of people in our workshops, because customers come to Maubeuge to take delivery of their machine,” argues Anthony Leroy. Once received, the machines are exported for installation on site. Assembly, training and maintenance are supported by the company. Shanghai is already on its 4th order, mainly for the maintenance of its metro, and the city of New Delhi in India is not to be outdone. A research and development unit makes it possible to design the machines and adapt them to customer demand and to the environment in which they will operate. The company relies on around ten employees: technicians and engineers.

SCULFORT YEL
