Description
Vintage Chinese Brush Pot with Red Seal/Mark on bottomPurchased in a village when we visited and then lived in Shanghai China from 2003 to 2008. Don't know it's history. Just used it as a decoration.
The brush pot is 4 7/8" tall with a 4 1/8" outer diameter.
It is not hand painted.
Not sure what it's made of. It's a ceramic-type material. It's pretty heavy for it's size.
Design is on 3 sides. Included photos in different light as the ceramic-type material kept having a glare.
Brush pots hold cultural and symbolic significance in Chinese art. They are considered objects of scholarly refinement and artistic pursuit. Brush pots are seen as a representation of an artist's or scholar's dedication to their craft, as well as a reflection of their aesthetics and personal taste. Some brush pots may also incorporate auspicious symbols or motifs associated with good luck, prosperity, or wisdom.
The primary function of a brush pot is to hold and organize brushes. The wide opening allows brushes to be stored upright, preventing the bristles from getting damaged or misshapen. The interior of the pot is often smooth and glazed, allowing brushes to be easily inserted or withdrawn.
Chinese scholar's brush pots are not only practical objects for storing brushes but also treasured works of art. They exemplify the fusion of functionality and artistic expression in Chinese culture and serve as a testament to the country's rich heritage and the enduring traditions of calligraphy and painting.
